Strategy is one of those words that sounds very smart, definitive and meaningful until you realize that it means something different to everyone. In my mind, the definition of strategy is simple. It means understanding available options and identifying the one that best gets you to your end goal.
But when I’ve heard the phrase “you’re not being strategic” what it usually means is one of three things:
- Knowing: You haven’t done the fundamental exercise of understanding what are the options and what path should be chosen.
- Showing: You know what’s important but you’re not doing a good enough job of showing how connecting it to the tactics.
- Doing: You know what’s important but the work you’re doing has nothing to do with it.
So what aren’t you doing?
